The Wave is going to be the largest march in support of action against climate change ever. The aim is to get 50,000 – 100,000 people flooding down the streets of London and surrounding Parliament.

It’s going to take place on Saturday 5 December 2009, the week before the UN climate summit in Copenhagen, to demonstrate to politicians the public demand for action on climate change.

The Wave, organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, will show mass support by people from all backgrounds for a better, low carbon future for the UK and the world.

If you want to come along the Co-op and Oxfam are organising trains and coaches from Manchester down to London. More information about transport here.

You can also get involved beforehand by asking your tutors/lecturers to spend some time discussing Climate Change for part of the week preceding Copenhagen. And coming along to The Wave fundraiser on 3rd December at Red Rum, Fallowfield.

Halloween Tree Planting Weekend November 4, 2009

A WEEKEND OF TREE PLANTING – 30 GREAT PEOPLE PLANTING ALMOST 1000 TREES!

Early Saturday morning we met up with new and old faces from MMU and University of Manchester and set off to to the surrounding hills of  Hebden Bridge.  No sooner than we arrived we were set to work in the most glorious surroundings planting baby trees that would grow into forests providing new habitats for surrounding nature, protecting the valleys from flooding and serving as a sustainable fuel source.  Everyone was in high spirits, being in the country air was definitely a nice change.  Even those who had forgotten wellies were plunging their soaked feet into the muddy ground with beaming smiles.

After a hearty soup lunch we carried on planting  until 4 o’clock and then headed back to the hostel/barn where we would be staying.  We were treated to the best vegan dinner by  Penny from Treesponsibility and then settled  down with  drinks in hand for a good old chinwag  around the roaring fire.  Once we’d had enough  drinks to ensure complete and utter sillyness, Adie  took us into the barn to play lots of very amusing  games including a game of spoons which  included many scraps the floor fighting for the spoons – but no one came away seriously injured. Well just!  And  of course the hilarity was added to by a some Halloween fancy-dress, of course as trees!!!!!

As the evening drew on people slowly disappeared to bed but not before a good old sing song around the fire where we taught each other songs from around the world, including Ciao Bella Ciao Bella, CIAO CIAO CIAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We woke on Sunday to a full vegan breakfast, who would have thought that was possible!! However when we looked outside the weather didn’t seem to match our full warm bellies, it was chucking it down!!  But in true trooper style we carried on regardless, still with smiles on our faces.

After lunch and having planted almost 1000 trees over the weekend we gave into the weather and in true student style we headed to pub.

The weekend was a great success, with not a low point throughout. We made new bonds in our People and Planet group and made new friends from outside it.  Everyone had an amzing weekend, doing something good for the world and good for themselves and personally I can’t wait for the next trip!!
